The Early Montecristo Years

It was the year 1935 when Alonso Menendez purchased the Cuban Particulares factory from the producers of the well-known Particulares cigarettes. Following the model that was set by the manager of Romeo y Julieta, Menendez chose to change the name of the brand of cigars to reflect the Torcedor’s favorite cigar rolling book – The Count from Monte Cristo.

The story of revenge for personal gain has also inspired the Montecristo logo, designed by John Hunter Morris which consists of a triangle composed of six swords surrounded by flowers.

Montecristo as well as the Cuban Revolution

In the wake of the increasing popularity that was Montecristo, the Montecristo name, Menendez bought the H.Upmann factory in the following year and relocated production to the factory.

In the Cuban revolution, Montecristo was nationalised, and the brand continued to produce in H. Upmann. H. Upmann factory. Much like many private cigar business owners in the time, Menendez left for the Canary islands in order to revive the Montecristo brand. He was supported by British investors, however, production was not able to resume in the United States due to a failed legal dispute with Cubatabaco.

Following the Cuban Embargo Menendez returned to Montecristo within the Dominican Republic so that he could continue shipping into the U.S. This brand was controlled by Altadis SA, though it was not as popular or as well-made than the initial Cuban produced Montecristo brand.

In the 70s and 1980s, Montecrsto (now under the control by the Cuban government) increased in quality and recognition. It was able to establish itself as one of the top Cuban brands and is currently one of the most well-known Cuban cigar brands around the world, with nearly a quarter market share.
